Meet Julia

Julia is a corporate lawyer, board director, speaker and writer.

She qualified as a barrister, winning prizes in her Bar Exams. Today, she is a solicitor specialising in international corporate and banking working for British and American clients.

After competing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for Britain at fencing, Julia took up board appointments on various public sporting bodies, including UKSport and Sport England. She chaired sportscotland between 2005 and 2007 and was a board director of Scottish Rugby Union Limited from 2019 – 2022

Julia has a wealth of experience as a public speaker, having spoken at breakfast briefings, conferences, and dinners. She is as happy speaking to hundreds of professionals at an industry conference as she is to school assemblies and clubs. She has regularly been interviewed by the press and media on legal matters, women in sport, and sport generally.

Throughout her life, Julia has been fascinated by history, especially that of the long eighteenth century, sea voyages and the women who history forgot. She is now writing her first historical non-fiction book.

Julia lives In Edinburgh. When she is not in archives or researching online, she enjoys sailing, walking and gardening.

In 1999 Julia was awarded an OBE for services to sport, especially fencing, and is featured in Who’s Who.
